Trump ask US Congress to suspend US Economic Assistance in Cameroon due to Systematic Violations of Human Rights

His letter to Congress reads:

Pursuant to Section 506A (a) (3) (B) of the Trade Act 1974, as amended (19 USC 2466a (a) (3) (B)), I hereby notify you of my intention to terminate the designation of the Republic of Cameroon (Cameroon) as a recipient country of sub-Saharan Africa within the meaning of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

I take this action because I have determined that the Government of Cameroon has committed gross violations of internationally recognized human rights, in violation of the eligibility requirements of section 104 of the Agglomerations Act. and in agglomerations.

Despite an intensive engagement between the United States and the Government of Cameroon, Cameroon has not responded to concerns about persistent human rights violations committed by Cameroonian security forces. These include extrajudicial executions, arbitrary and unlawful detentions and torture.

Accordingly, I intend to end the designation of Cameroon as an AGOA-eligible sub-Saharan African country from 1 January 2020. I will continue to assess whether the Government of Cameroon is committing flagrant violations of internationally recognized human rights, in accordance with the conditions of eligibility for AGOA.

DONALD J. TRUMP
